Selamat Hari Raya!
Id Mubarak!
Multicultural cooking classes run by the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre,
celebrated one of the biggest Muslim festival days
Id-Ul-Fitr. Nearly 30 people gathered at the Riley St hall to celebrate this special day.
It was good to see that people from different backgrounds (religious, language and national)
gathered and celebrated the spirit of
Id-Ul-Fitr. People from Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh cooked their yummy
special food which they cook on their special celebration days.
It was very interesting to hear how each country celebrates Id-Ul-Fitr in different
ways although the celebration has common threads among those countries too.
Id-Ul- Fitr marks the end of the Ramadan - one month of fasting observed by
Muslim people around the world. People cook special food and an open home
invitation is extended to all. Special prayers are made, and during the day,
people visit friends and relatives houses. Some people visit cemeteries to pay
tribute to their ancestors on this day.
Id-Ul-Fitr is not only feasting and socialising, it is also a day for forgiveness
for past grievances and to pray for peace and prosperity.

Getting together over a meal . . .
How Exotic !
There is nothing better to bring people together than a common interest in food,
and therefore in life.
The Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre is conducting multi-cultural cooking classes,
featuring a mixture of expert cooks and knowledgeable amateurs.
Participants contribute by volunteering to cook dishes that are specific to
the areas that they come from.
Aromas mingle and friendships form, as a range of people from different
cultures become proficient in making laksa, sushi and lasagna,
just to name a few. Patcharin from the Thai Orchid in Crown Street,
has demonstrated some amazing vegetable carving to help decorate dishes :
"...so even if we make a mistake in the recipe it will still look amazing
and tastes sensational." said Susan, who comes regularly to the classes.
Many ideas, views and opinions have been exchanged and a whole bunch of
strangers have become friends. Classes are continuing and welcome new participants.
