Overview

George Bernard Shaw once said ‘I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.’

The Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre produces the annual Surry Hills Festival as a community development tool and a fundraiser for the Centre's community services. The Centre uses the funds raised for a range of community activities including childcare, information resources, English classes, multicultural services, low cost hall rentals for community and not-for-profit groups, advocacy and information and referral services for all members of the community, especially those in need.

The Festival has become one of Sydney's premier inner city events supported by the generosity of key corporate sponsors, artists & entertainers and the local Surry Hills community. The Festival has a strong family, multicultural and youth focus and houses a great array of children's activities, markets, information stalls, community groups and entertainment. This day has many cultural benefits, by providing an arena for local artists and artisans, by stimulating and supporting cultural activity, and by simply providing a free social and family day. This community festival is also an opportunity to inform residents about services and resources available within the community and in the surrounding area.

The Festival enhances local businesses in the area by promoting the area to greater Sydney, and facilitates a positive relationship with residents, businesses and Council.

Festival goers are entertained throughout the day with live music provided across three entertainment stages and two DJ stages. The 250 markets stalls will provide incredible diversity, inviting Festival goers to browse through the Bazaar Alley, engage with local artisans, enjoy something sumptuous from the International Food areas, kick back in the Chill Zone, and much more. .

Planning and execution of the Surry Hills Festival depends on a large volunteer team, with numbers of volunteers involved in the 6 month lead up to the Festival. We anticipate 100 volunteers will be involved in the 2007, which in itself provides significant opportunities for local people and even those only passing though to get involved in this local event. The pool of volunteers is diverse and typically includes residents of Surry Hills, retirees, students seeking work experience, local community groups and people new to the area seeking to become a part of the community.
