Can't speak English? We can help!

If speaking English is difficult for you, we can arrange for an interpreter. Telephone us on and give your name, language and 'phone number and we will call back as soon as possible with an interpreter. You can arrange your own interpreter through T.I.S. by ringing 13 14 50.

Free English Conversation Classes

English conversation classes are organised by the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre and are run by a qualified ESL (English as a second language) teacher. Everyone is welcome, and no visa is required.

What can the SHNC do for me?

Besides different classes and programs, the Neighbourhood Centre also provides referral information and organises different information sessions.

If you are new in Australia or in the Surry Hills area and want to know about the local and government services we can help you. We can provide you with information about CentreLink, local schools, Childcare, hospitals etc.

Most of our staff are bilingual. If you have any difficulties speaking in English we can arrange an interpreter.

The Neighbourhood Centre encourages local people to volunteer to help us and to become members.
