Doherty Hall, the Surry Hills community centre building on Crown Street has been demolished to make way for the City of Sydney's magnificent new four level community building.

When completed, it will be Sydney's most environmentally-friendly Community Centre and will house a new Library, a 26-place Childcare facility and dedicated space for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Click here to register your interest in having your children attend our Long Day Care service at the new Centre.

Again, at last, we will be able to offer room hire to local community groups so they can run their activities in comfort and safety. Click here to express your interest in holding your group meetings at the new Centre.

We are very much looking forward to the new space and modern facilities the building will have to offer the Surry Hills community.

The $14 million design features an internal glass bio-filtration atrium where specially selected plants filter the air before it is naturally cooled underground and recirculated throughout the building.

This new Community Centre will set a benchmark in environmentally sustainable design, showcasing cutting-edge innovations and demonstrating the City's commitment to environmentally responsible development.

It should also be a lovely place to be, to visit and to participate in the increased programs we will be able to run!

The grand opening of the new Surry Hills Library and Community Centre is now planned for January 2009.

In the meantime, the Centre's activities which were previously carried out at Doherty Hall have been temporarily relocated: the Neighbourhood Centre itself operates from Bourke Street Public School (corner Mort and Bourke Sts, enter via the Mort St gate). Our temporary 'phone number is 02-9310 2888. The temporary childcare address is 1 Beaumount St, Chippendale (enter via Pine St), with a telephone number of 02-9699 2126.

Surry Hills Festival 2008 on the green!!!

The 2008 Surry Hills Festival was the most successful yet, with a record number of visitors and participants! Blessed by fine weather, the crowd at this year's Festival was estimated at 90,000.

Chair of the SHNC, Linda Scott, said, "I’d really like to give a big thanks to all the local community who came out on Saturday to support the Neighbourhood Centre at the 2008 Surry Hills Festival. We’re so lucky to live in such a thriving creative community. I’m really proud that the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre can provide the opportunity for our great local artists and designers, all of whom donated their time on Saturday, to promote their designs or music to the broader community. And of course, all their efforts directly assist the Neighbourhood Centre’s community services program."
